Symposium on "Archean Tectonic Styles: Constraints and Inferences" Concludes Successfully
On May 17–18, 2025, the international symposium "Archean Tectonic Styles: Constraints and Inferences", jointly organized by the Center for Global Tectonics (China University of Geosciences, Wuhan), the University of Science and Technology of China, and the International Lithosphere Program (ILP), was successfully held in Wuhan, China. The event brought together over 150 experts from more than 40 research institutions and universities, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Nanjing University. Distinguished attendees included Academicians Yongfei Zheng, Mingguo Zhai, Guochun Zhao, Wenjiao Xiao, and Qiuming Cheng, who engaged in in-depth discussions on the globally frontier topic of Archean tectonic evolution. Professor Lu Wang, as the chief organizer, ensured the smooth execution of 33 oral presentations and 27 poster sessions.
During the opening ceremony, Professor Jianwei Li, President of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), delivered a speech on behalf of the university. Professor Timothy Kusky spoke on behalf of the Center for Global Tectonics. Academician Mingguo Zhai commemorated the pioneering contributions of the late scholar Professor Brian F. Windley to early Earth tectonic research. Subsequently, nine discipline leaders including Academicians Guochun Zhao and Mingguo Zhai presented keynote reports. The conference content covered:
Tectonic observation and modeling: Scholars reconstructed Hadean-Archean tectonic styles through multidisciplinary approaches such as machine learning, structural geology, petrology, and geochemistry.
Tectonic evolution and metallogenesis: Participants deeply explored tectonic controls on mineral enrichment processes, including chromite deposits in Archean greenstone belts (by Academician Jingsui Yang) and BIF iron ores.
Environmental co-evolution: Academician Yongfei Zheng pointed out that the "dialectical relationship between observation and interpretation" is key to deciphering Archean oxidation. Conference reports also discussed potential impacts of Archean tectonic processes on Earth's heat production, climate and marine environmental evolution, continental exposure, weathering, and life evolution.
Professor Timothy Kusky, Director of the Center for Global Tectonics at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), stated: "This conference has established an important collaborative framework for decoding Earth's earliest tectonic style codes."
